Stress Management In The Workplace
Stress in the workplace is an extremely common thing most people have to face. Stress is inevitable for most workplaces, but the key is to learn how to control it. You can manage stress and keep it to a minimum if you recognize the factors that can lead to stress in your workplace and utilize ways to minimize the effect they can have on you.
Common sources of job-related stress and coping strategies include:
Co-workers with bad attitudes
Most of us have had to deal with rude co-workers at one time or another. Having to be exposed to that rudeness can cause a lot of stress for anyone, making their job performance suffer needlessly.
Several means of handling this type of problem exist. Here it’s important to choose your battles. If you can ignore the rude behavior and get your work done, let it go if at all possible.
If this tactic doesn‘t work, try discussing the problem with them directly. There are times when they may be unaware of the way their attitude comes across to others. An open and honest conversation can be a simple solution that brings down the stress level immediately.
If talking it out doesn’t correct the situation, make an appointment to talk with your supervisor to let him or her know the extent of it and how it’s affecting your job performance. Your boss may choose to take charge and bring correction so that everyone can do their job more effectively.
Poor Management
Maybe it’s not a rude co-worker you’re dealing with, but a mean boss. Putting up with a boss that makes you miserable can be very stressful. You’ll want to try talking with them first to see if that helps the situation.
Bosses have bosses too. If a manager is creating an uncomfortable or stressing work environment for you do not hesitate to involve their supervisor in your complaints. As with co-workers you will want to make sure that your complaints are factual, non-emotional, and supported by appropriate documentation. Write down offenses and document all inappropriate behavior before bringing the case to upper level management
Suffering silently with a management problem is not a good idea. It will make you miserable and anxious and eventually flow on to decrease your productivity and effectiveness. Most places of business want to hear about these types of situations and will do what they can to correct them.
Assignment Overload
Having more work than you can handle will inevitably result in much more stress for you. Take on only what you can handle at one time. Don’t be afraid to ask others for help and be willing to reciprocate and help them when they need it. Teamwork can be a key in reducing stress for everybody.
Discovering, reducing, or eliminating workplace stress where possible is a positive step towards having a fulfilling and productive work experience. Stress in the workplace is inevitable, but correctly managing stress can help prevent job burnout and increase job satisfaction.

Burnout is a kind of job depression caused by feelings of helplessness – uncontrollability. When funds are already low and incoming check too few, it is easy wonder if it is possible to succeed and to fear that no matter what you do you can’t.
Burnout is a motivational problem. Constantly searching for assignments and getting way fewer than you need, having to take assignments below your capability or not to your liking, working on tedious projects that pay little and then having to wait for long periods to get paid – while watching prices climb – erodes motivation. And these are only a few of a long list of motivation killers. It is easy to become discouraged, and blaming yourself.
It is imperative to manage your motivation if you expect to succeed as a freelancer. Giving yourself rewards is helpful. But you can’t wait until finishing an assignment. You need to reward yourself for small steps. Important to reward yourself for getting started, for doing a little bit, for getting started again, for doing a little more.
We’ve all heard about the power of goal setting. This is when it is vitally important. But it is easy to set impossible goals and negative goals.
Being a skilled self-manager is essential for succeeding as a freelancer – but awfully hard to develop when struggling with the challenges of freelancing. The problem is that when motivation is damaged, it is very difficult to revive.
